Formats & Genres

  • Board books are made from durable board, rather than paper pages and are meant for the very young who tend to bite and chew
  • Picture books are those where the art is as integral, if not more so, to the "reading" experience as the words.
  • Beginning Readers combine careful vocabulary choices for beginning readers, with a large, pleasant font, and pictures.
  • Chapter books are usually novels, but can be long stories, where pictures are fewer in number and seem to be an addition to the text, but not essential to it.
  • Graphic novels  are what used to be called comic book compilations. While they have existed for decades, it is only recently that they have come to be a recognized form of children's/YA literature, and so finally found acceptance among awarding committees and librarians.
  • Verse novels are collections of poems that have a unified story, rather than separate poems that may share a theme.
  • Fantasy: about magical people or beings that exist in our world or other worlds.
  • Historical fiction: set in a past time period that conveys information about that period or a specific historical event.
  • Nonfiction: informational books that explain facts about a subject or concept in the real world, including biographies.
  • Picture book: tells a story with images, with few or no words
  • Poetry: language stirring the imagination or emotions with carefully chosen words arranged for meaning, sound, and rhythm.
  • Realistic fiction: set in modern times and based on modern situations. Children can experience different cultures or lifestyles from their own.
  • Science fiction: setting and plot centered around technology, time travel, or outer space featuring elements not found in the known universe that are explained by scientific means.
  • Science fantasy: blending of genres where science and magic are used.
  • Traditional literature: folktales, fairytales, myths, legends, fables, and any other types of stories passed down from generation to generation, often through oral tradition.
