Generative AI Student Research Guide

--Using generative AI and explaining its impact on academic integrity and scholarship

''

In general, use AI to generate good questions rather than answer them.
Treat it like a friend with a broad knowledge base who frequently lies.

What are AIs, Chatbots, and Generative AI?

  • AI (Artificial Intelligence) and chatbot are both terms that are used very loosely in popular media.
  • An AI is a computer program designed to process an enormous amount of data, identify patterns, and make recommendations to a human user or sometimes make decisions.
  • A chatbot is an AI designed to convincingly imitate human speech. Chatbots predict what a person would say when given a prompt, such as a question, and then write an answer based on the data that it has available to it.
  • Generative AI is a blanket term that has come into use to describe AIs that produce text, audio, or visual content.
  • It has been applied in various fields, such as creative content generation, data augmentation for training other AI models, generating realistic images for computer graphics, and even assisting in drug discovery through molecule generation.

However, it's essential to note that with the power to generate realistic content, generative AI also raises concerns about potential misuse, such as deepfake generation and fake news propagation. As the technology advances, ethical considerations and responsible use become critical to harness its benefits responsibly.

Tip: If you want to remove AI from a Google search, add -ai to your search.
